4 Healthy Ways to Deal with Anxiety

Millions of people suffer from anxiety. Feeling anxious and uneasy is a daily reality for many people. While most of us can work through our anxiety, some of us are severely crippled and may struggle to maintain relationships, speak in public, keep a job, or even go outside. If you’re experiencing anxiety, it’s important to educate yourself and find healthy ways to cope. Here are 4 ways to deal with anxiety.

Limit Caffeine

If you’re an avid coffee drinker, switching to a decaf may be the key to reducing your anxiety. Some studies show that caffeine can increase stress hormones, cause sleeping problems, and may react negatively to many medications. While this could be very difficult for you to do, you can try it out for a week or two before deciding if this is a permanent change you need to make. Keep a journal to gauge your anxiety level while you’re undergoing your no caffeine experiment.

Use Humor

Humor can be a great way to defuse a situation that causes you to feel anxious. When appropriate, making light of a situation can help you to relax. Don’t understand how this works? Learn about situational humor. Many of these jokes are based on situations that are embarrassing, stressful or anxiety-inducing.

Accept Your Best Effort

Anxiety can sometimes be linked to a desire to be perfect at everything you do or perceiving that everyone else is much more capable than you are when it’s not true. Give yourself a little grace by accepting your best effort, even when it’s not perfect. If you feel like your best effort truly doesn’t compare to your peers, create a game plan on how you can improve your skills. This could include asking friends for help, furthering your education, or lots of practice.

Be Proactive

Many people that experience anxiety have triggers, like going on a date or deadlines at work. Find out what your triggers are and take action to get them under control. If you have anxiety about deadlines at work ask a coworker or friend for help, ask for an extension, or create a game plan to ensure your project is completed on time. Anxiety about a first date? Confirm your time and place, think about questions you’d like to ask your date ahead of time, plan your outfit, and give yourself an extra 10 minutes to ensure you don’t show up late. Being proactive can prevent an already stressful situation from causing overwhelming anxiety or becoming a negative experience.
