Staying in shape isn’t just for the young, it’s for the young at heart, too. The benefits of exercise are the same for people of all ages, providing you with more energy and a general sense of well-being. While exercise is important for children, teenagers, and adults, it’s especially important for older individuals to stay active. As a person ages, they lose muscle and bone mass. After the age of 40, many men tend to gain weight, but only as fat. Remaining stationary means that you will continue to gain fat weight and lose muscle mass, which isn’t a good combination.

                If you’re not in the habit of being in an exercise routine, it may be a bit of a challenge to start one when you’re older. Many people with medical conditions might feel like exercise is just going to make their problems worse. Actually, the opposite is true.                 Another common excuse for not exercising as you get older is the fear of falling or hurting yourself. As long as you stick to an exercise routine that you can handle, there’s no reason to fear hurting yourself. In fact, exercise helps improve mobility, which will reduce the chances of you hurting yourself doing normal everyday tasks.

                You don’t need to design an intense workout to reap the benefits of exercise. Don’t think that you need to run a mile or spend an hour on the elliptical machine to see the benefits of exercise. Experts say that all you need is 30 minutes of moderate physical activity to get most of the health benefits from exercise. Going for a brisk walk or a bike ride for 30 minutes would be an excellent way to begin your new exercise habit. Working in the yard or doing chores around the house are also great ways to stay active.

                Many people say that they’re too old to start exercising, but the truth is that it’s never too late to start. Staying active is especially important for elderly people and can help them reduce the risk of heart disease and other ailments. Even if you have a chronic medical condition, you’re better off exercising. Don’t worry about exercise making your condition worse. It’s the lack of activity that will cause your condition to worsen.

                If you’re disabled, you can still find ways to stay active. People who use wheelchairs can still do things like lift weights and stretch. These activities can help improve their range of motion and improve their muscle tone. Chair aerobics are a great way for disabled people to increase their heart rate and circulation with a zero-impact workout. You can actually burn fat and calories—not to mention reduce your risk for heart disease—if you get a good 30-minute chair aerobics workout in each day.
